Apart from being a wife, and mother, I'm also a part-time Local Authority Paralegal and a Cilex student.
I've always been interested in the law. I remember dreaming of being a barrister when I was at school, to me the law had a certain lure. Unfortunately for me my teenage years found me being a little rebellious, I had a boyfriend with a car and much preferred spending my time with my friends drinking cheap alcohol down the local park than staying at home studying. My straight A's fell by the way side and by the time I got to my final year of 6th form I was struggling, I left with two A levels, no where near enough points to get into Uni. I moved between various jobs before finally settling at the legal unit, supporting the team specialising in Social Care. As odd as its sounds I really like my field of law, you never have two days the same and I honestly feel like I'm a small clog making necessary changes to children's lives. Many people see us as the bad guys but if you had read some of the things I have your point of view may not be so black and white.
It was a few years before I decided to take the plunge and start studying law. Owing to my personal situation (mortgage, bills, children) going back to a formal education wasn't viable. So I decided Ilex, as it was then known, was my way forward. Distance Learning is hard, you have to be dedicated and you have to put the work in. As it stands I've completed my first year and have another 3 (at least) to go. I passed every single exam I took with a distinction and even got 96% in my final practise unit, I was unbelievably proud of myself. Studying with a young child whilst still working is no easy feat. I haven't yet plucked up the courage to start again now I have two young children, but I will. Even if it takes me 10 years to complete, I will do it. I'll realise my dream of being a lawyer.
